Description: Helping families deal with the special challenges of middle and late stage care for individuals with Alzheimer's type dementia is the proposed topic for discussion during the June 9 Alzheimer's Association affiliated support group meeting supported by Statesboro First United Methoidist Church. Family members caring for loved ones at home and in facilities meet regularly the second Monday of each month in the church library on the second floor from 1:30-3:00pm. Individuals throughout the area are encouraged to attend and share ideas and learn new strategies for dealing with this pervasive neurological disease that affects over 900 indivduals and their families in the area. All caregivers have something in common. They had another life before this illness invaded the family unit. Unlike other illnesses, friends often do not rally around to immediately assist the family, perhaps because they do not know how to perhaps because of fear of the unknown. More likely, it is because there is no one defining moment when the disease is obvious. A growing library of books on the subject of dementia is available in the church library and at the regional office of the Alzheimer's Association at 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA 31406. You may call 1-800-272-3900 for more information about AD or go to www.alz.org/georgia Please enter the church from the back parking lot door.
