CONTRIBUTING TO OUR SOCIETY:

I'd like to remind everyone that the two animal-rescue groups in town are made up entirely of volunteers. There's a huge amount of neglect and cruelty in this community, and these volunteers have decided that they will do what they can to alleviate it. They're all just as busy as anybody else. Most have children, and nearly all have full-time jobs and other activities that take up plenty of their time.

Yet they make time to help some of the most vulnerable members of our community, by doing things such as keeping foster animals in their homes; shuttling the animals to and from vets' offices; spending hours every week at adoptions; making and answering countless phone calls; sending and replying to hundreds of e-mails; keeping up with stacks of paperwork; maintaining websites; creating brochures, posters, and other forms of publicity; putting together fundraisers; attending seminars; presenting informational talks to various audiences....

No doubt about it. Volunteer work is demanding, and it's fulfilling. And it's necessary. There's so much need in our society. The rescue groups in our area need all kinds of help. They especially need foster homes for all the lovely animals that come into their care. Foster homes are the absolute best way to help get the animals ready for their new families. Fostering isn't for everyone, but it's not as hard as you might think.

If you have a talent -- or just a desire to help -- please get in touch.

GETTING A GREAT COMPANION:

The two rescue groups in town have ADORABLE cats and dogs that are ready to go home with you -- as long as you’re a kind person who will take proper care of them.

The cats and dogs (and bunny rabbits?) that are currently available through the local rescue groups are up to date with all of the necessary vaccinations, and they’re also spayed or neutered. Most of them are housetrained. And all of them are lovable and cute as can be!!

There is also an equine rescue group made up of three volunteers who use their own money and facilities/time. A new partnership may be formed after a meeting Wednesday and more good news may be announced that will help the equines in need.

We definitely need an equine rescue group in our area. I hope you'll keep us all posted about this group, and I hope it'll grow and get support and have a real impact on our community.

Too many people seem to think that all they have to do is slap up some barbed wire and leave their horses out in the blazing sunshine with a bucket of moldy water and a patch of scrubby grass. That ain't enough. Horses need care, just as we all do.

People who don't know what they're doing shouldn't have horses, and people who have horses but don't take care of them should be prepared to have them taken away. And then they should be prepared to appear in court and, I hope, pay some hefty fines (and serve jail time if the situation calls for it).

The same is true for other animals ... and for human children. They need attention and care!

Coyote Creek Equine Rescue has been in operation over two years. Partners at this time are Donna Parker, Holli Bragg and Nancy DiPolito Hodges. They are meeting Wednesday with a lady who has property and wants to open an equine refuge.

The rescue stories are fascinating and these women have been successful. Funding is an issue, since they lost a 22-acre rescue pasture last year, but hopefully after Wednesday there will be another option for the group's efforts - and maybe an additional partner.
