July brings the danger of dehydration for individuals with dementia. Some elders living independently will neglect their water intake, perhaps believing that the less they drink, the less adult incontinence supplies they will need. In this season especially, caregivers need to strongly encourage water intake as symptoms of dehydration mimic some of the behavioral changes seen in people developing Alzheimer's type dementia.
If a person with dementia needs "Depends" or other hygiene supplies, they can come to the "Caring Closet" at the Outreach Center in Statesboro, and receive free supplies once a month.
The "Caring Closet" is sponsored by the GA Alzheimer's Association and the local Pilot Club and is staffed by volunteers from 9:30-1:30 every Friday at 515 Denmark Street. Call 912-920-2231 or 1-800-272-3900 for additional information and assistance with Alzheimer's Disease caregiving.
Caregivers are encouraged to attend the support group meeting the second Monday of each month at Statesboro First United Methodist church in the 2nd floor library. No reservations are needed for this caregiver led group.
