Well, Statesboro's remarkable season ended last Friday in a 41-21 defeat against Rome.
For those that may be asking, "What happened?", the honest answer is, nothing, really.
Rome just had a better team on this night and proved they were one of the top four teams in the state. For SHS, there's no shame in the loss. Afterall, the Blue Devils were one of the final eight teams standing, and any football coach will tell you that's pretty impressive.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed covering this team this season. Every day, every week, every practice, game or film session was a treat for me. Coach Steve Pennington said from day one that this was a special group. Looking back, he was right on.
Now we turn our attention to basketball. I'm pretty pumped about my first night of Devil-ball this Saturday against Johnson.
From all accounts, the boys' team could be sneaky good, and looking at the schedule, they good be off to a quite an undefeated start before all is said and done. You want see anyone putting up 30 points each night. Instead, much like the football team, this will be a blue collar squad intent on just getting the job done. Old school.
The Lady Devils have an exciting freshman in Alissia Jenkins, who we've already tabbed as Athlete of the Week. Heck, the kid's 5-10 as a freshman. Region 2-AAAA has another tough young lady in blue-and-white to deal with for the next four years.
I'll see everyone Friday night, and hey, let's get that new gym up and running for the kids.
Sounds like sour grapes to me, howyoufigger. While no athletic program, nor school, is perfect, it would be hard to find a better high school football program than Statesboro High. It also would be hard to find a more decent, fair and superb coach than Steve Pennington.
Go Devils! Thanks for a great season.
I agree 100%. I hope the Statesboro community realizes how great of a man we have in Coach Pennington. Don't take him for granted. I hope he stays here for a long time.
HYF, you can't blame the students/players IF the " school puts football before education."
Wishing no more wins is a cruel thing to say, when you think about how hard the kids work to excel. Wish punishment on those you feel are responsible, but don't wish for kids to experience loss just because some adults may have misplaced priorities.
High School football is an important part of the high school experience, and the memory of winning games - especially when they reached playoff levels - is priceless. I remember buying a spirit ribbon each week and looking forward to our games.
Are you really angry about something or just trying to stir up controversy?
Look at the School Spirit sports produces in students. They can still feel the thrill of their HS experiences years later.
(For those looking, error in second sentence of this blog. I leave the rest to grammar patrol. "They" obviously should be "who",, and the commas should be cleaned up. <For those they may be asking, "What happened?", the honest answer is, nothing, really.> )
I'm still kinda in a daze from what happened on Tuesday night.
The more I tell the story, the more unbelievable it becomes. So I'll tell it again.
