I don't know what was behind the land that was acquired for Splash, but I do know it would have been a mess to try and have a Splash in the vicinity of Luetta Moore park. There is no where for the traffic to go. What about the Fair Road park too? Those pools have not been opened for a long time and if my memory serves me correctly it was because the crowds at them in the summer go WAYYYYY out of hand and folks couldn't go there to enjoy them anymore. At least Splash in the Boro charges and this cuts down on the FREE child care during the summer, thus hindering unruly throngs of unsupervised children. I can't help you out with that question very much. I will tell you to call the city councilman that represents your area. That will do better than the blog probably.
while I agree that the parks in the city should be renovated, the issues are vastly different. Splash pays for itself, operates in the black. The parks in the city would cost money, so it isn't a good idea to compare the two.
How about looking at comparable communities to see how many of them have no public pools. I doubt you will find any.
I guess everyone has different memories.....but I remember going to the pool on fair road as a child and having sooo much fun. As far as unruly, unsupervised children if you want to see them go to Splash or at least that has been my experience. The rules for Splash are "Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a responsible person age 16 or over" Talk about maybe not free but really cheap day care!! The last day we went this summer I saw a parent drop off about 6 kids with a "responsible" 16 year old....
I'm really not bashing Splash because I think it has been great for the community but we do need these other facilties open for all of Bulloch County.
I took my grandson to Splash one time and that was enough for me. I was just a spectator. The larger kids were completely out of hand. But anytime you have huge amounts of kids in one area there will be problems.
Employees of Splash were really good at trying to keep things under control.
They claim the pools are to far shot to fix. The county kinda got screwed when the consolidated services like that. They inherited two aging parks, that will cost a fortune to fix, and the city has no responsibility to help financially.
Parks aren't the only thing that have suffered budget cuts. You are right...Splash does pay for itself. I find that action speaks louder than words. You want the parks open...get up and do something about it. The community is an opportunity for everyone to get involved. Get behind it and support it.
