BGC Steppers Open Doo-Dah Step show
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Bulloch County performed at Georgia Southern’s annual Doo-Dah step show at the Hanner Feildhouse on November 5th in preparation of the 2008 Homecoming. Acts included dances and steps from the University’s own Greek fraternities, sororities, and non-Greek groups wanting to show their talents. Members of the Elvera Mays Teen Center had the opportunity of showcasing the arts of dance and step. The BGC Steppers, consisting of twelve young ladies, and the group Infamous, comprised of five males opened the show.
The groups have been in practice for the past few months and have improved throughout the month. In being a part of an extracurricular activity in affiliation with the Boys and Girls Clubs, the steppers and dancers are asked to maintain a positive attitude and a grade point average of a “C or better.
“The step team has influenced me to do better with school so that I can stay on the team. said Niesha Daniels a BGC Stepper. “Being on the team keeps me motivated to do better not just in school, but also in everyday life situations agreed Elijah Cone another step team member.
The BGC Steppers are lead by the Elvera Mays Teen Center’s art instructor Mrs. Briana Collins, a senior at Georgia Southern University. She has high expectations for the group’s future and plans to schedule more performances during which the group can improve their show.
The Teen Center is a positive place for young people to grow and have fun while learning, with programs ranging from educational and career development to sports, fitness and recreation. The teens have time to work on homework and discover who they are as young adults. In the process of participating in the enrichment programs and learning, the teens are also having fun.
“I love stepping. I have a passion for it, and I want to be a choreographer in the future, said Jessica Harper. “The team has kept me motivated to pursue my dream of becoming a choreographer and to improve my grades.
