Skittles and School Spirit

My five-year old daughter, Rebecca, is only in her kindergarten year at Bulloch Academy, but she already exhibits a tremendous amount of school spirit. Rebecca wants to attend every football game and support every school fundraiser. She loves being a pom-pom girl (mini cheerleader) and is an enthusiastic participant in the school’s many dress-up days (crazy sock day, silly hat day, green and gold day, etc…).

Sometimes Rebecca’s school spirit even manifests itself in comical ways. For example, the other evening I gave Rebecca a small bag of Skittles to have as her dessert after supper. She immediately dumped all of the candies out onto a napkin and began to eat the red, orange and blue Skittles. Soon only the green and yellow candies remained.

"Mama, look at my B.A. Skittles!" Rebecca called out to me, pointed excitedly to the little pile of candies left on her napkin. "They’re green and gold, just like my school colors!"

After I admired the Skittles for a moment (that’s the sort of thing we parents do, right?), Rebecca told me that she was going to bring the candies to school with her the next day to show all of her classmates.

"Hmm…" was my only reply.

Well, as it turned out, the Skittles never made it to school. Rebecca carefully wrapped them up in her napkin and stored them on her bedside table overnight, but by the next morning the siren song of those little green and gold candies was simply too much to ignore. Rebecca quietly ate all of the Skittles in the time between finishing breakfast and leaving for school.

Now, normally I do not approve of my kids eating candy first thing in the morning, but in this case… Well, let’s just say, it was probably all for the best!

What a great cheerful blog. We need a change of direction. You can see the enthusiasm in her face. If kids do not enjoy school they may become a statistic.

I have always thought the lower grades were the most important. If the love of learning and exploring is not instilled in them by the time they reach middle school there is a good chance they will not make it. By the time they get to middle school the time for playing is over and you really get down to hard core learning. Keeping them inspired is the key. I think Miss Rebecca is certainly on the right track. Good job Elizabeth.

Thanks, CBWill. I agree with you that the elementary years are probably the most important. After all, you can't build a strong house on a weak foundation.

I am thrilled that Rebecca identifies so closely with her school. It just seems to make sense that kids will perform at a higher level when they feel personally connected to their teachers, their classmates, and the learning process itself.
