For me, Halloween brings back a flood of happy childhood memories. I remember the fun little class parties we had in elementary school (my mother was usually the one to bake the cupcakes for such events). I remember the annual ritual of carving the family jack-o-lantern at the kitchen table. I remember the various homemade costumes I wore over the years---Raggedy Ann, a fairy, a princess, a flamenco dancer, and a prom queen; I always preferred the pretty to the scary. And, of course, I remember the act of trick-or-treating itself, the thrill of running from yard to yard in the moonlight, collecting as much "loot" as possible in the time allotted.

After about the age of eleven or twelve, when I was too old to trick-or-treat any longer, Halloween lost a bit of its luster. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the holiday, but it was never as exciting as it had been when I was a little kid.

All that changed, however, when I had my own two daughters. I can honestly say that experiencing the holiday through the eyes of my children has been just as much fun as it was experiencing it myself as a child.

This year my five-year old daughter, Rebecca, helped me decorate the house for Halloween. We put up ceramic jack-o-lanterns, and scarecrows, and photographs from earlier years of my daughters wearing costumes.

My twenty-three month old, Anna, has been in on the Halloween act as well. A huge fan of pumpkins, she joyfully points them out whenever she spots them in stores or on doorsteps---which is quite often this time of the year. The other day we tried her little pink fairy costume on her to see how it would look and she was clearly thrilled to be all dressed up.

Perhaps best of all from my point of view, Rebecca’s kindergarten class is having a little Halloween party on Friday, and guess what. This time I am the mom bringing in the homemade cupcakes!

Does picking razor blades and shards of glass out of your candy after a night out trick or treating count as a fond memory?

Fred,We speak of days gone by.For example,I shall never forget a Halloween when I costumed myself and took my two children around the area we lived in.Some neighbors did not get the pleasure I did so I took their children along also.Whenever we left an area I counted carefully 1-2-3-4-5-6.Leaving our last stop and enroute home I counted 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 -WHOOPS!It took us three hours to find out where our additional ghost came from.

Thanks for reminding all of us about happy times. Some may have had a difficult time in their childhood, but everyone has happy moments. Some just chose to remember the bad and forget the good. That way they can hold on to their hate and try to bring others down. Thank you for sharing your childhood memories makes me smile.

I agree WhatsayU. I am all for humor but this is not the place for sick humor. Halloween was not a big deal when I was child, so I missed out on some fun. I got a chance to share it with my son, neice and nephew. My sons first halloween I dressed him as a little hobo. He was just starting to walk and was so cute. Years later I made a little clown outfit for my grandson. Have a safe Halloween and I hope you get lots of goodies.

Like a kid in the candy store we just can't wait to open up the baggie of goodies.

I think it was fun getting sick and staying home the next day...just so I could enjoy all of the loot I hid under the bed. It was hard pulling it off since my dad was a teacher then a middle school principal. But it was fun!

Halloween is my favorite time of year, I usually take the whole week off!! Last year, my granddaughters and 2 of their friends spent three days of that week at various free activities around town. We attended the festivities at Eagle Village, Greek Row, and finished up the week at Eastern Heights Baptist Church. It was good clean fun and one day I know they'll be sharing their fond memories of their "crazy" Mimi with others.
