Hats off to our local law forces . . .

Just when I sat down to write a blog to commend Capt. Howard Nesmith and the Bulloch County Sheriff's Department for their role in the success of Portal's 27th Annual Catface Turpentine Festival held earlier this month, I received an email that I would like to share with you pertaining to our local law forces.

We've often heard that when death of loved ones comes to a community, it often comes in threes. Such is the case over the last few weeks. It is common for us to have heavy hearts when we lose a loved one and it hurts us to see other family members and friends hurt also.

A recent funeral brought our retired minister and some of his family members to our church from Greenville, SC. Following is the email I received a few days later from his daughter, Jeanne.

"Have you ever written an article (even from the perspective of a visitor to Bulloch County) on the amazing, reverential respect with which your community honors those who are mourning the loss of a loved one? I have never seen or heard of anything like what I experienced as we drove in the procession to Statesboro. There were times my hand went over my mouth as I said--there's ANOTHER officer. When you think about it, it is such a fitting and final tribute to a member of their community they may or may not have ever known--but with military precision acknowledged so beautifully. I am still saying to everyone who asks about my trip, 'I was so impressed...let me tell you about the local law forces in Bulloch County.' No one here believes me. And we are southerners, too. I guess we've always known that South Georgia was special...and this was just another way to confirm it. I am still so unbelievably impressed."

Yes, Jeanne. Several years ago I wrote an article to the editor, Statesboro Herald, praising the local law forces for the respect they had shown my family during funeral processions.

I'm glad to do it again especially since local law forces have touched the lives and hearts of many families both within and outside Bulloch County.
