On behalf of the Southeast Club of Deaf (SECD) and Ray Williams, the SBCPRD submits this blog:
*Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department has been a cornerstone to the deaf community with recreational activities while enhancing vital life sustaining info.
*Thanks to SBCPRD. All know Honey Bowen was ahead of her time.Twenty years ago, after our request for space to have recreational activities, she said she wanted to see deaf, but also the blind use facilities.
*Mike Rollins, and I might add, Sherrie Zeigler, and front office personnel has been there for us when we've encountered a snag as needing a fence on Northside Drive or a volleyball post.
*We wish to show our appreciation for all to see and know. We've been self-sustaining except for having a place which SBCPRD has provided.
*Functions of deaf clubs have historically been info sharing who, how and what, such as married, birth, deaths, and solving problems, sharing info of employment, how to do things in everyday life.
*SECD has met this goal while enjoying activities.
*SBCPRD has enriched our lives from solitude to involvement. Many lives have been touched.
*SECD has had a fashion show, softball team, deaf tournament, a banquet, two statewide camp outs, float in parade, workshops for interpreters, grieved loss of fellow deaf, celebrated marriages and births, while having visitors from Atlanta, Augusta, and Florida. We've even had a voter registration drive.
*As technology has become such a vital part of our lives so has SECD for sharing info and recreational activities, all with thanks to SBCPRD for the place to meet each month.
The SECD presented SBCPRD a plaque in recognition of all their support of the club.
