Over 800 third grade students from Bulloch County schools will receive a special personal dictionary in September as a Statesboro Pilot Club community project.
The dictionary project reflects the work instigated by Ms. Annie Plummer, known as the "Dictionary Lady" in Savannah. A number of years ago, Ms. Plummer started giving free dictionaries to the children in her neighborhood who did not have adequate school supplies. At first, she gave out only a few dictionaries, but other people and businesses and churches heard about Miss Annie's plan. They began to take her dictionaries to distribute in Savannah. Before she died, she gave out over 50,000 dictionaries.
The Statesboro Pilot Club adopted this as a community project several years ago as a way to encourage children to study and develop their minds.
The children at Julia P Bryant and Langston Chapel Elementary were pleased and excited to receive their own dictionaries from Pilot Club members on Monday, September 15, 2008. Photos from both schools are attached. Just click on the small image to see the larger photo of the children.
