I loved going to Georgia Southern football games as a kid. My family did not have fancy seats (the six of us sat together on the grass slopes for almost every game), and my frugal dad was not one to often splurge on extras like popcorn or cold drinks, but the games were a blast anyway.
My husband, Clint, also grew up watching GSU football. Like me, many of his happiest childhood memories go back to home game Saturdays. So, of course, when Clint and I had kids we knew that they had to be raised as little Eagles!
We bring our daughters, Rebecca (age five) and Anna (age 22 months), to almost every game at Paulson Stadium. The girls may be too young yet to understand the rules of football, but they certainly pick up on the excitement of the crowd. Both of them love to cheer on the team and wave their little pompoms from the stands. They love the band, and they love the cheerleaders, and they love the Eagle mascot---Gus.
And I love that we are having fun together as a family, and that my children are experiencing something that I enjoyed so much myself as a kid, something that my own parents and in-laws enjoy still today. Rituals and traditions---like Georgia Southern football games---certainly go a long way to bridging the gap between the generations.
Go Eagles!
