I am an optimist. This "sunny side of the street" mentality drives some of my loved ones crazy; they say I'm just setting myself up for disappointment, but my belief in the inherent goodness of people was vindicated this week and I'm here to tell you the milk of human kindness flows through Sylvania.

As we all prepared for the effects of Hurricane Hanna this past week, Register, too, made preparations to deal with possible prolonged power outages and damages from wind and water. What worried us the most is that we didn't have a generator to power the main well's pump should we lose power. People can do without lights and A/C fairly well, but water is essential. So Mandi Pilz, our town administrator called Sylvania's manager, Carter Crawford, to see if they could lend us a generator for the duration of the weather emergency.

The City of Sylvania GAVE the Town of Register a generator more than capable of operating the town's water system! But, wait! There's more! They BROUGHT IT TO US! Then, as their town hall is located in a former bank--with vaults--they offered to take our permanent records for safekeeping until the emergency passed.

I'm ordinarily a very measured user of exclamation points, but the amount used in the preceding paragraph serves to underscore our gratefulness for Sylvania's kindness and generosity toward our little town. We are truly thankful and so blessed.

"My hometown" Where I was born and where I will die. Not the birth place of my Mother and Daddy, but where they too chose to live and die. Great little town.

This is an awesome show of consideration by the town of Metter. Thanks for sharing this.

I have heard so many god things about Crawford. Talk to any of the city employees, those out on the street, actually working, who were with the city of Statesboro whe he was there, and they will tell you he was an excellent manager who could balance the bottom line, with what the employees needed.

hungryman, what does Metter have to do with this??

Carter Crawford is a good man and Sylvania is lucky to have him. What a kind gesture. Why did nobody contact the newspapers ahead of time so they could write stories about the gift?

Watchdog, there was no "ahead of time" to contact the Herald--Sylvania offered it one afternoon and brought it the next day...and besides, we've been told innumerable times that the Herald only has two reporters so if we want to get in the paper, we need to do it ourselves. Hence, the blogged thank you and the more formal note sent to Sylvania's mayor, city council and city manager.

Plus, we've all pledged to root for the Screven County Gamecocks this season, maybe two. That generator's worth a lot!
