Alzheimer's Association Support Group meets monthly at Statesboro First United Methodist Church in the church library on the second floor. The suggested topics for discussion for the September 8 meeting are: "Alzheimer's 101" (Basics of Alzheimers) and "Making the Most of Physician Appointments".
The group meets the second Monday of each month from 1:30 to 3:00 in the afternoon. Families in the greater Bulloch County area are encouraged to attend these free, confidential, small group discussions led by a former caregiver.
Studies show that many caregivers suffer physical illnesses and may succumb to death before the person they were caring for. It is imperitive for caregivers to plan time for respite to protect their physical and emotional health so they can assist the person with dementia. Families and churches have a responsibility to provide support to family caregivers during this long term, degenerative brain disease.
Faith communities interested in developing a "Circle of Care" for caregivers are encouraged to call the Alzheimer's Association and ask for Jenny House, Programs and Services Director. Call 1-800-272-3900 for additional info about Alzheimer's disease and to locate services in the community.
