What did we learn from Statesboro's opening season win over Josey... very little.

The Blue Devils won in easy fashion, beating an overmatched Josey squad 40-7. What we can take away from this contest is that Statesboro had no need to perform at its very best.

The Eagles brought just 35 players with them on the bus. And while their efforts and athletic feats were impressive, they just didn't have the depth to compete with a team striving for a state championship. Sometimes, that's just how it goes.

Fans may have been a little upset at the lack of passing out of the offense - Luke Connell was 1-for-1 with a touchdown - but if there's no need to pass it, why do so? Or why show future opponents what you can do through the air for free?

Expect a little more after this Thursday. That's right, Thursday. Friday's game will be played Thursday at  7 p.m. due to the threat of that pesky Hurricane Hanna. During Thursday's game, the Blue Devils will most certainly be more tested than they were in Week One.

Groves has more kids and more athletes than Josey. The Rebels were shut down by state power Houston County last week, but that may have been the test they needed to see where they are.

Another easy win is certainly possible for SHS, but don't be surprised if this game is closer than most think.

On a side note, the Battle in the Boro softball tournament is still scheduled to take place this weekend at Mill Creek, hosted by SHS. The tournament was canceled  on Aug. 22-23 due to some nasty weather.

Since the football Devils are off this Friday, make some plans to watch the Lady Devils in their first home games of the season.
