When son Ron and his wife Melinda called to say they'd come from Warner Robins to meet me at the farm for fishing and a picnic on Saturday, they urged me not to bring anything for eating. Their goal was to just have me there for the fun and they'd provide the food.
However, you know how mothers and grandmothers are when it comes to cooking. All I could think about was how good homemade sloppy joes and a few other treats would taste for the picnic. After all, I wouldn't even have to worry about refrigeration since within an hour after finishing the sloppy joes in cast iron, I'd simply take container and all right to the picnic spot.
Of course, I baked a dozen cup cakes and one of my dump cakes consisting of a large can of crushed pineapple, topped by a can of cherry pie filling, one dry butter recipe cake mix, two sticks of real butter (sliced), and slivered almonds. Although I placed the cup cakes in my bread basket and covered it for transporting, the dump cake remained in the large rectangular baking dish with tin foil on top.
After picking up chips and two varieties of buns, I was ready to join the family.
We tailgated on the pond dam in the shade and it was just plain fun loving on my children and grandchildren.
But you know what one of the funniest things turned out to be?
Except for bottles of ice water and fruit juices, their cooler remained packed.
Would you say this is just another example of a mother and grandmother seeing her family enjoy her cooking?
How many of you still remember those special dishes that your mama used to cook when you were growing up,along with the memories of family and friends?
Happy memories to all of you!

Oh yeh! I remember those times. My Mother and Grandmother have both been long gone, but memories live forever. Now I'm the one doing the cooking. My son and his family eat with me at least three days a week, sometime more. My daughter-in-law ask me once if I got tired of cooking? I told her it was payback time.

What a treat. I know that there is nothing in the world that is better than my mama's cooking. And though my Granny is gone now, I remember being a little girl and being amazed at how she even made a sandwich somehow taste better. Now I have children of my own, and to be honest, I don't enjoy cooking. My kids are so picky!! Was there ever a time when your kids didn't eat the things you fixed? I wonder if they will ever come around and start enjoying GOOD food! If I would just fix pizza or taco's every night...they would be completely happy with that. It sure does make me feel like I have somehow failed them. Maybe I should just start cooking more and asking them to try new things. My husband says that I go out of my way to fix several different things trying to please everybody...but none of what I fix is very complicated. I want to do better. You have inspired me to try harder!!

CC97, most kids are picky eaters. Give my 15 year old grandson mack and cheese or pizza and he is happy. We always tried to get them(the other is 22now) to eat some vegetables. The store where I shop had green beans on sale 3/$1.00 last week. I told the 15 year that I had bought 24 cans. You should have seen him roll his eyes. Have you tried sheppards pie? Both grandsons love it.

I have mentioned Sheppard's pie to my boys and they look at me like I'm crazy. NONE of them like mashed potatoes...what kid doesn't like mashed potatoes? Out of my four...I couldn't force a spoon full down if I had to. I'm serious...I am so worried!! My mama says I was picky too when I was little, but that I eventually came around. I just wonder if that is the case with my babies. I guess I could just cook what I wanted (Sheppard's Pie sounds good) and then either they would eat or they wouldn't. My husband laughs at this threat...becuase he knows I will fold and fix them what they want. It's just easier. After a hard day's work, I just want to come home and take care of my family. Make sure everybody is fed and happy. But I do wish it was something besides sandwiches, or mac and cheese, or tacos that made them happy.

Hang in there CC97! You'll see the day when you'll think they're going to eat you out of house and home! It'll get to the point that when they do grow up and leave home, it'll take you years before you can cook just enough for you or for you and your spouse. Bottomline: Just love them the way you already do and make sure they get a balanced diet between what you feed them and what they get at school or elsewhere. By the way, tomato based foods such as pizza, spagetti, etc. are packed with healthy nutients for the entire family. By the way, this same batch of grandchilden were the world's pickyest eaters when they were young. . . Believe me, you have nothing to worry about.
Thanks for writing and best wishes to you and your lovely family.
