I cannot believe the stunt John McCain pulled today...

Newly chosen vice presidential Republican nominee Sarah Palin says: "It turns out that women in America aren’t finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all."

He just insulted every Hillary Clinton supporter by picking Sarah Palin because he assumes that they only voted for Clinton because of her gender! That is embarrassing and desperate.

Who is this woman? She is a heartbeat away from being President (McCain is 72) and recently asked the question...What exactly does the VP do everyday?

Oh my.

I suggest we swap tickets. Put McCain and Bidden together and pair Obama with Palin. That way we can have a choice between the ticket that knows what in the world is going on or the I don't have a clue but I am young and attractive and you can make a statement by voting for me.

bullochguy commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 09:41 AM

He didn't assume that all of Hill's supporters, supported her just because she was a woman, but the fact remains that many did just for that reason. I believe it is only an insult if you believe that is why they supported her.

If he'd picked Romney, would you have anything nice to say? How about Huckabee? Lieberman?

Efreisone commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 10:06 AM

Picking Lieberman like he supposedly wanted to would have shown that he still had some of that "maverick" in him and would've been an admirable pick, even if I don't much care for Lieberman. Palin offers absolutely nothing other than her gender, which isn't going to cause any Hillary supporters to vote for McCain.

statesborogirl commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 11:39 AM

I am insulted if you think thats the only reason you think he picked her! Just because I am a woman do you think I was going to vote for Hillary? I hope you don't think woman go around not knowing anything about politics but just saying "oh there is a woman running I'll vote for her" Woman today are just as educated as men. You know we constantly discuss race in these blogs but you fail to mention your prejudice against woman.

Efreisone commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 12:18 PM

It is the main reason he picked her, and as I basically said, no I don't think every woman supported Hillary, or that Hillary supporters are suddenly going to go for a women that is the polar opposite of Hillary just because she's a women.

And no, there's nothing wrong with choosing a women if she was qualified. If he chose say, Hutchinson, I'd have much less of a problem with the pick.

bullochguy commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 12:37 PM

There was aproblem with picking Lieberman. Lets face it, most Republicans do not like Mccain. If he went tith Lieberman, many, mant Republicans would have stayed home. Now I am talking the hard core part of the party.

Palin is a strong Conservative, which helps with that part of the party. She can also be considered a "safe" pick, as she doesn't have the baggage the other guys do.

Then you also have the Gender issue. While I do not believe all Hillary supporters were behind her just because of her gender, some were. I believe many dems, supported her above the other Dems because of her gender, but I don't think they will "jump ship" because of Mccain picking Palin. This is akin to the large number of blacks supporting Obama. They didn't vote Democratic because of his race, but they supported him above the other Dems because of it.

southgapassion commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 18:49 PM

I thought the McCain/ Clinton would have been ideal and might even have voted for Obama/Clinton because she could have monitored his "foriegn relations".

We are One Nation, UNDER GOD - it's not religion, it is the constitution. Google Obama relgion and hear his rhetoric and his "version" of religion. The arrival of budahism, Islam, etc etc is a biproduct of imigration, we are the great "melting pot" always have been. It's who we are, but our constitution is based on Christian beliefs although it does not demand that everyone be a christian.

paisley commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 20:47 PM

Bullochguy, I do think a McCain/Romney ticket would have been ideal but I also think, sadly, his religious beliefs did him in. Romney is a Mormon and the McCain camp probably felt many main stream Republicans probably couldn't relate to that.

I really do think it would have been a good ticket that way, Romney has a solid record.

bullochguy commented on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 21:21 PM

I know there is some religous bigotry in this country. I look at it this way. If your religous beliefs influence your polacy, the beliefs that influence it are pretty much the same in LDS and Christianity. I'd hope most people would see it that way, and realize he was a good choice. We don't have that to worry about now, even though as you said the ticket would have been ideal.

I don't know if I could have supported Mccain with Hillary as his mate. I'd have had to throw my support to Barr!

I don't think the candidates' gender or personal religious beliefs should enter into it as long as the person is ethical, and proves it by actions. Like many have said here, this is why I could not ever support Clinton. Although she is has a long record of activism, she is not ethical in my opinion and would do anything to win. If it had been an Obama/Clinton tickit, I would probably have had to bail out on supporting the dems and likely not bother to vote.

I would definitely support a woman for pres or VP (the guys have sure screwed things up), but I don't see any woman out there who would be willing to run and who would fit the bill. Palin's beauty queen mentality just turns me completely off. But to be fair, I guess it's no different than Arnold's Mr Universe mentality, and I think he's done a darn good job in California. But Palin is clueless - probably far less aware of what's going on in the world outside of Alaska than most of us here.

bullochguy commented on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 09:00 AM

Interesting that you talk about ethics, yet you support Obama don't you? There are many unethical things in his past. The biggest being the Ayers situation.

whatnext commented on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 10:14 AM

This blog is about Palin and Clinton, not Obama. I'm interested to hear what Palin has to say, and how she thinks and reasons considering her inexperience. I'm open to giving her a chance to prove herself.

Being governor of a remote state, mayor of a city of less than 10,000, and a beauty queen with a bachelor's degree in journalism are not much in terms of qualifications. Sounds to me like her early aspirations were to be a spokes model. If she meets the challenge of the national stage, I will be impressed.

bullochguy commented on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 11:37 AM

You brought up the Obama ticket. I just figured I'd help you be objective. Why no straight answer?

Actually, if you look at it, being Governor of Alaska has a lot of unique challenges. Things are hard there, and much different that the rest of the country. An influx of people when it is daylight, and out flux before the dark spells. There are many challenges that someone would not face anywhere else. That gives her an advantage in a way.

paisley commented on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 14:04 PM

I just think it will be very interesting to see how see looks against Joe Biden in a debate. Talk about inexperience and experience!

Again, I was mainly insulted by what McCain did because even if it is not a ploy to get Hillary supporters, it definitely comes off that way.

southgapassion commented on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 14:19 PM

I don't think it was a ploy or a political play in the perverbial chess match. I think it was smart on him as he's a considered a "maverick" and come to find out she is as well. I think part of the reason he chose her to rebuff Obama's attempts at implying he "just doesnt' get it" as she, a mother of 5, is obviously aware of what families are facing these days.

Gender might and might not have been a part of the political choice, but I'm sure it was an after thought. An unforseen benefit. I'm sure he didn't say "Aurgh, find me a woman!!!".

bullochguy commented on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 14:26 PM

So your going to be insulted not based on what he did or why, but rather just on your perception of what he did?

paisley commented on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:00 PM

I'm just trying to be nice, we all know that is a HUGE reason why he picked her.

In the end, of course it is just my opinion, and you obviously don't agree with it.
