Things have been pretty interesting on the blog site these days. We have several new bloggers registered on the site, and welcome the new "faces" and the opinions that they bring to the community page.
We also have a number of new blogs on the site, ranging in topic from city politics to movies and beyond. I was happily surprised to see that a couple of the blogs have been viewed over 600 times, and have over 100 comments back and forth between bloggers that are sharing their views.
I think it is great that we all have a place to go to share our opinions with our friends and neighbors, and that, for the most part, bloggers are expressing their thoughts in a way that is not injurious or defamatory to other bloggers.
I do want to address something that I have seen on the pages over the past few days, and that is the issue of blogger anonymity. It is my belief that bloggers should have the right to blog on this site anonymously. It allows everyone the liberty to express their opinions without having to worry about what repercussions those opinions may bring from others in the community. If a blogger chooses to reveal their identity in their profile, they may, but notice that everyone is also given the option to "hide" their profile. There is a reason for this, and I would hope that other bloggers in our online community will respect the privacy of others and not reveal blogger identities on the Web site.
I am excited that we have a place to freely discuss and debate the issues that are of importance to the community, and look forward to seeing you online!
You are correct Ness. The good thing is that I do not care that I have been identified by name. Usually I will speak up as openly as I can. It probably was not hard for these people to identify me since I have had problems with city council actions in the last few months. I have also been very vocal about my thoughts about Club Zone. I do have the courage of my convictions. I was taught that trait by my deceased father. He did warn me however that It probably would cause me grief at some time but I will not stop speaking out.
I think that my name was posted in hopes of shutting me up. But as I said before, it won't. But I will not post anyone elses name even if I know them and I am truley only one blogger, LAKERAT.
What does it matter if you blog under two different names? I know a couple of people who do this.
I figured Scargo and Lakerat may be partners or friends but never cared or imagined they were the same.
Lakerat, you show class and courage. The person who attacked you and accused you of being two people lacks those characteristics.
Keep on practicing that valuable lesson your father taught you!
Watchdog you are correct Lakerat is a class act, one that truley does have a heart and cares very much for our community. We need more people like that around here.
Scargo you have the same qualities as well.
Hey colaguy you better be careful, I think your name was on the blog that was emailed with my name on it.
I appreciate your kind remarks about me. Yours also watchdog. I do try to do the right thing, but I can be a bulldog also with sharpe teeth.
gwarfan, please don't let anyone know that you and I are the same. I don't want to blow our cover. Just jokeing. I think you are a great asset to the community Lakerat. You truly care what goes on in that area. The majority of us live miles from there. Some of the first shopping I did as a young Mother was in Simmons Shopping Center. There was a 5&dime type store on both sides . I wish I could remember the names of them. A Woolworths was on main street. My Mother and I parked in the strip mall parking lot and walked to woolworths pushing my son in a strowler. There was a Rexall drug store on corner of mall. That really brings back memories for me. I am probably the only person on here old enough to remember back then. Best of luck Lakerat!
gwarfan, I know they are not the same but are both great people and statesboro is lucky to have them both.
We are not the same, but I do know who she is. She is actually gorgeous and I am only glamerous. She is married and I am a widow. She is fairly young and I am fairly old (well not quite) I would take her body....and maybe her husband also. Just kidding scargo. Actually we are Hannah Montana and Milly Cyrus. I am like Hannah since I am more gutsy and she is like Milly since she can sing. Hey I think we should do our own stand up act at the Averitt Center.
Hey, Lakerat, I would go see that show. It may even be better than the one city hall puts on.HA! HA!
It's kind of comical..if you were standing where I am. I did not know who Lakerat was until a blog revealed it, but I had pretty much figured it out, ok? Fact is...we have both appeared as angels in a show at the Averitt Center. How cool is that?
I want so bad to meet you gals. I think I know who Lakerat is. You were angels in a play? I can believe that. You may both just be the guardian angels of West Main Street.
You do know that there is a flaw in your system that allows people to see who some bloggers are, even if there profile is private don't you?
I found that flaw several weeks ago...I think. You're talking about the one where you search the bloggers?
Yep. Someone pointed it out to me.
What ever happened to getting a recently updated list of blogs too?
I've reported that flaw in the system numerous times in the past. It happens if you have a subscription to the paper with the same username as your blog username. When you log in to read the paper, it keeps you logged in when you post a blog and that subscription profile (instead of the blog profile) is what shows in Search Users.
I had suggested that the Herald change this to make the subscription login database entirely seperate from the blog login database, but the answer I got was that many subscribers had requested the feature (of keeping them logged in to post).
You are right bullochguy - this is a HUGE flaw and compromise of people's privacy for the sake of convenience for a few subscribers. But the Herald does not see it that way.
So the only way around it if you want to keep your blog profile private is to create a different useranme for blogging; and always remember to log out after reading the paper, and then log in again with the blog username to post.
For those names that are aready out there for public viewing, I don't think there is any fix except asking the Herald to manually hide your subscription profile on their back end system. Unless they have recently changed the system, we don't have the access permissions to be able to hide our subscription profiles ourselves.
To their credit, the Herald did add a big Welcome message in huge font indicating what username you are logged in as, when you click "Post a Blog". They also provide the "Log out" feature just above the comment box so that you don't inadvertently post with the wrong username if you have a subscription that keeps you logged in and shows your profile.
Now that so many of the subscription profiles are showing even when users have chosen to hide their blog profiles, maybe the developers could add a "trigger" to the system, that automatically hides the subscription profile if the user has chosen to hide his or her blogger profile. How about it, Ness? Can you pass this suggestion on to the developers?
Some people who don't have subscriptions have there name available. If You use your name to set up your account it shows in the search feature.
You can update your account and delete or change the name there.
Yes, I have found that flaw in the system as well. I don't care if people know who I am. I - like Lakarat - believe that whatever I speak, I ought to be willing to stand behind. But at the same time, I also understand that there are many people who want to share their thoughts and opinions who absolutely MUST protect their identity. A few of those people have actually been discovered and threatened, and that is not at all right. We ought to repsect a person's right to remain anonymous if they choose it.
