Saturday August 16--Over 225 people attended “Once Upon a Prom,” a Gala for Ogeechee Area Hospice, this weekend. The goal of the event sponsored by the local hospice agency was to raise money for its patients and to raise awareness for non-profit hospice.
The event, which was a throwback to the proms of yesteryear, was sponsored by HospiScript, McKesson Medical, Drs. John and Angie Gerguis, Timken, Mumms Software, Perkins & Will, Digital Office Equipment, Lewis Color, Frazier’s Flowers, Statesboro Herald, and GA Eagle Broadcasting.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout for the first year, said Abbie Blackmon, Community Relations Coordinator, “The venue and catering were great at Georgia Southern, and the band was amazing. We can’t wait to do it again next year.”
The theme for this year’s event was “The Love Boat,” and the Nessmith Lane Building was transformed into the deck of a cruise ship for guests to enjoy. Entertainment for the night was provided by the Sensational Sounds of Motown from Athens, Georgia.
“The band started playing and within thirty minutes the dance floor was overflowing with people. The best part is that it stayed that way until the last song. This was proof to us that Statesboro needed this type of event,” said Blackmon.
To go along with the prom theme, guests had the option to purchase flowers for their date and take “prom” pictures. Prom King and Queen awards went to Mr. and Mrs. Garrett Nevil for being the couple who had been married the longest. The couple was given gift certificates to Bernard’s Jewelers and RJ Pope’s. he Prom Prince and Princess were awarded gift certificates to 119 Chops Restaurant after winning a game of Simon Says.
Ogeechee Area Hospice hopes to make this an annual event. Founded in 1994, Ogeechee Area Hospice has provided services to the terminally ill in their homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospitals. They opened their Inpatient Center in 1995 and strive to exceed basic regulatory requirements in all aspects of their care.
