When I first heard about the shooting in the Unitarian Universalist church in Tennessee, I told myself that this terrible act of violence just happened to occur in a church of my own denomination. I told myself that this anguished and disturbed man chose this church randomly and it could have just as easily have happened at the Presbyterian church next door. I felt deep sorrow for the congregation and for the many children who were present. These were the same emotions that I’ve had with other tragic events. But the pain was vicarious – not personal. Then I read the news on the internet that this man had indeed targeted this Unitarian Universalist church because of his hatred of liberals. My laptop is on a standing desk and I do most of my work standing up. But at this point, I fell into my husband’s desk chair – too dizzy to stand and too anguished to read more. How could this be? As a Unitarian Universalist, I have long spoken out against hatred and hate crimes. But I did this as an ally for those who were often victims of these crimes. I have been an ally of gays, of ethnic minorities, of immigrants, and others often targeted by hate groups. But now there is a “hate crime" being investigated because of this man’s extreme hatred of our liberal religious movement. Wonderful people are dead and injured simply because they chose to be a part of a religious movement that is open and inclusive. And I must admit, I had a moment or two when I worried about the possibility of copy cat shootings. But I am determined that I will not replace the love and compassion that I have for those affected by this violence with fear regarding the safety of my own congregation. I do not want to have meetings about the security of our church or place guards at the door on Sunday mornings. There will always be people who are disturbed and who resort to violent means – but this horrific event should spur us to do more to reach out and help them before they reach such a low point. As we ponder how to respond to this tragic event in our denomination, I am drawn to one of the songs in our UU hymnal. “Love will guide us, peace has tried us, hope inside us will lead the way." Yes, let us remain strong in the faith of the goodness of humanity and in the Power of LOVE, called by many names, to heal us all.

In Faith,
Jane

Jim Adkisson is a terrorist(this could be considered damageable, injurious, defamatory, libelous toward persons or organizations) who should be convicted of a hate crime and get the death penalty( this also could be considered damageable, injurious, defamatory, libelous toward persons or organizations). Inside his house, officers found 'Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder' by radio talk show host Michael Savage, 'Let Freedom Ring' by talk show host Sean Hannity, and 'The O'Reilly Factor,' by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly." These wingnuts (this could be considered damageable, injurious, defamatory, libelous toward persons or organizations) didn't make the killer kill people, but they contribute to pushing an unstable person over the edge. He listens to his Mullahs (Pat Robertson, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Rod Parsley, Ann Coulter, Michele Malkin, Mike Savage) then it’s off to kill some unarmed Liberals and gays. He stated in a letter that because he can't kill the liberals that run the country he will kill the people who vote for them. The feeble minds of the average listener of these programs(this could be considered damageable, injurious, defamatory, libelous toward persons or organizations) cannot process such rhetoric and discern the lies and manipulations of those who promote the evil.

This is an opinion, not an attitude.

This man is a sick person, period. You can't blame any other person for his actions any more than you can blame the gun that he used to kill people. He is sick, mentally disturbed. Nothing more.

UUStatesboro commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 16:46 PM

And here's another perspective. Our Unitarian Universalist Association President Bill Sinkford was asked by a reporter whether the man responsible for this tragedy should go to hell. Bill's response was, "In my religious tradition, this man has already been living in hell here on earth." Jim Adkisson was a deeply tormented man. I am sorry that there was no one close to him that realized the depths of his despair. I imagine that there are those like Jim Adkisson in Statesboro. Do you know him? If so, reach out. Let's try to get him (or her) some help.

CBWill commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 17:52 PM

People like that usually don't exhibit any behavior like that until the very minute they snap. If more of them did maybe it would not end with such tradedy.

watchdog commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 18:16 PM

What a stupid question for a reporter to ask. I like Sinkford's response.
Yes, there are people like Adkisson in Statesboro. A man here attacked his own mother with an axe. Someone shot a man Sunday morning at a local motel. Three young people were involved in the murder of the father and stepmother of one of the offenders. A couple years ago we had a hostage situation. I could go on, but you get the idea.
There are sick, mentally disturbed, tormented people everywhere, in every town, in every place you look. They look just like you and me. You can't tell by looking if someone is insane.
You can't blame the TV, the president, the Republicans or Democrats, the media, or even family members. To say "Pat Robertson, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Rod Parsley, Ann Coulter, Michele Malkin, Mike Savage" and others caused Adkisson to snap is ludicrous and just as wrong as Adkisson's ideas that "liberals and gays" and those who supported them deserved to die.

bullochguy commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 18:40 PM

This guy was as nuts as the types who bomb abortion clinics and rationalize it. I don't see how any sane person can defend abortion the way we have it in this country, however I don't believe anyone can rationalize those types of actions.

Savage, as hateful as he is, or anyone else is not responsable or a contributor to this. This man had issues that would have made him snap on someone. It is pretty sad to use your hatred to imply guilt of something like this on someone.

I myself believe in a real God and a book that is supported by History, however I respect others rights to believe in whatever they want, just as all logical people do.

CBWill commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 18:56 PM

I agree with you watchdog. We don't usually know until after the fact. I have known people that I thought would crack any moment, but they are still walking around. I know some of you may find this hard to believe, but years ago I had an uncle that had to be admitted to Georgia Regional Hospital in Augusta. The physician that treated him said he had lost his mind over religion. When he was released 6 months later he told my aunt to try to keep him out of church and off the subject of religion. Some people just let their mind get stuck on one thing and it drives them insane.

UUStatesboro commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 19:28 PM

Mentally ill folks often DO exhibit behaviors that communicate a need for help and many friends, family, neighbors, and health care professionals DO reach out and help, and many of these folks DO get better. But because they don't end up shooting folks in a church or school, we don't hear about them. CBWill, your uncle is fortunate that he had the kind of help that he did. We need to put much more emphasis on mental health in our society. And we all need to be better educated about mental health issues.

Watchdog,
You said "You can't blame the TV, the president, the Republicans or Democrats, the media, or even family members. To say "Pat Robertson, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Rod Parsley, Ann Coulter, Michele Malkin, Mike Savage" and others caused Adkisson to snap is ludicrous and just as wrong as Adkisson's ideas that "liberals and gays" and those who supported them deserved to die and yet I would love to show you on paper, that the FAIR TAX is a rip off for the average American and yet after hearing these people push the FAIR TAX on their shows 24/7 everyone that I talk to wants the FAIR TAX and yet I could show them that they will pay a lot more tax and they still would vote for it because these people said that it is great. It is called propaganda and it works to promote any agenda. I remember very well, Limbaugh blaming Marilyn Manson for the Columbine Murders.

AGAIN, THIS IS AN OPINION....NOT AN ATTITUDE AND IT IS NOT SNOTTY(does that mean snot is running our of my nose while I am typing this?), WHATEVER THE HECK THAT IS? Maybe is is a southern thing, that snot runs out of your nose when you have an opinion. I am clueless.

bullochguy commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 20:51 PM

The fair tax will be a rip off. However if it were possable to make it do what it is intended for it would not. The intent is to eliminate hidden taxes in products and payroll taxes, therefore eliminating overhead and making prices go down. Then the extra tax would cause us to break even.

Unfortunately, this will not happen. Companies would not drop there prices to reflect the elimination of the taxs. It is one of those things that is great in theory, but not in practice.

Just stating it is a ripoff is dishonest. There is still a very poor attitude behind those opinions, but this is America and right now you still have that freedom.

CBWill commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 21:29 PM

Did I miss something here? What in the hell does fair tax have to do with that mentally ill person going to that church and shooting those people? I'm no doctor but it sounds as though someone commenting on this blog is about to blow.

Deborah Lee commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 21:37 PM

Yes, you are missing something. My point was that if you talk about the FAIRTAX 24/7 or that LIBERALS CAUSE ALL PROBLEMS IN THE U.S. 24/7 people are going to believe it. You can't be that thick, can you?? "I'm no doctor but it sounds as though someone commenting on this blog is about to blow." THAT WAS YOUR COMMENT. I hope that you will not be blogging when the contest starts because you will make that person not contribute to a charity. That statement sounded like BASHING TO ME. P.S. I will not be blogging because I just don't get the whole concept of keeping people quiet. I will be blogging somewhere else. But, I will be back. SORRY.

CBWill commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 21:54 PM

It started out as a simple blog about the man shooting at the church because they did not preach hatred towards and race, sex or religion. I pay my fair share of tax, does that mean I can get a gun and shoot people? You are totally confusing me.with all this mumbo jumbo crap of yours. The man was mentally ill. End of story. Have a nice day{good comment] I hope you don't find your way back here.[bad comment] Now you have the good and bad. That should make gawalkman happy and me even more confused.

nick_carraway commented on Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 at 23:37 PM

Guys, c'mon - can we please just step back and take a breather on this one? Nothing is going to get solved and nothing positive will come of going at each others' throats. This is a pretty horrible thing that has happened, and I don't think that anyone is saying that it is okay to "get a gun and shoot people." We all know that this is not acceptable. I also don't think it's fair to discourage anyone from sharing their opinion - I'm just having a hard time understanding why it can't be done without getting ugly and personal.

gwarfan commented on Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Your point is "that if we hear something enough we believe it". To a degree i can follow that line of though but f you do that without thinking about it your just a sheep or insane. We think for ourselves about ideas or at least we should. I think America is the best country in the world, sure that is a bit of a repeated theme here but I read about other systems, I went to other places, I talked to other people, and I came to the idea as being correct. I hear about the Fair Tax and Liberals on the radio everyday. I think the ideas are interesting but I do not suppor the FT for sure, I think it is a ploy and I do not buy it. You can not blame talk shows or ideas for people being to stupid to think for themselves and maybe actually look at something before they condemn it or follow it. Propaganda is a tool only, just like a fork. You do not blame the fork for someone eating to much do you? This guy was sick in the head. He and he alone went in there and did a horrid, cowardly thing. No one on tv or the radio said to kill anyone.

When I first started blogging it was fun and enjoyable...then Deborah Lee showed up. Are you really brave enough to act like this and print your real name. Surely, this is an alias?!!
