Observations on my generation, Part 2

In my last blog I mentioned the cult of the individual which I believe pervades my generation. Here I will attempt to elaborate on this phenomena.

Sartre once said that man is condemned to be free. I believe that this supposition is more relevant to my generation than to any other. Having failed to identify ourselves as a group, we are forced to forge a new identity at the individal level. Unfortunately, rather than creating something new, my generation seems to prefer destroying something old.

We millenials tend to revel in the eradication of all things sacred. We are guided by an impulse toward manifest destruction and renunciation which the Dadaists cultivated around the turn of the 20th century. We find solace in cynicism and rejoice in the absurd. For example, one of our most popular cultural icons is a talking meatball found on a late night cartoon show. Another, found on the same network, is a record spinning, smooth talking, young version of Jesus Christ.

This proclivity for irreverance often manifests itself in my generatons's fixation with drugs. Like the baby boomers before us, we have used drugs as a means for cultural expression. In the case of the millenials, however, drug use serves a much more simple and nihilistic end.

Rather than seeking out some unseen truth, my generation has found significance in the act of drug abuse in and of itself. We find comfort in the fact that even though we may sink to the deepest depths of human dejection, at least we know who we are and where we stand. We therefore divine a sense of identity from the act of shameless self-destruction. This is the perverse reality of my generation. Drugs are being used at younger and younger ages as a kind of rite of passage. An act for a spititually bankrupt generation to cut its teeth on.

I will not presume to claim that drugs have done nothing for society. I do believe, however, that the path to a new realizaton is not always found through drug use. Although drugs have sometimes served throughout history as liberators of human conciousness, they have also served as the most rapacious consumers of human will.

May I suggest that y'all stop with the drug use/abuse bit, and give Jesus a shot. I think you will find Him a high that will never leave you.

Maybe the increased drug abuse in this younger generation is a result of the tendency to "revel in the eradication of all things sacred" and finding "solace in cynicism" and rejoicing " in the absurd."
With a decrease in family wholesomeness, spirituality and togetherness, added to an increase in technology-driven pasttimes (video games)and the decay of morality, the future world is a frightening place.

BUT...what about all the non-druggies? There are so many level headed young people out there in this mean ole' world ,that you never read about in the media, because it is not sensational news. I believe we have more young people with good morals than we have without morals. I have been involved with the school system here in Bulloch County since 1998, and this is where I get my percentages. Try talking to the young people ,ages from 12 to 20 and you will see for yourself. Get involved with them in Church and you will soon see that our future world is not as "doomed" as you may think. Believe in the young people and watch them flourish. Actually you may learn something good from them. They are much wiser than we were at their age.

You are exactly right ibdaisy. You can tell by how much more interest was generated by the blog on this Zeke character than there was on the young veteran. The whole world seems to worship the wrong things. They should get their priorties on order. Look up to what is good and not a passing fancy.

You can not free base Jesus. I tried and it does not get you high. People have been taking drugs since they knew what they were. Ethnogens are there in every religion to get you closer to god via drug use. But Kids don't snort blow to get enlightened they do it because it feels good. Meth feels good when you do it, H feels good, Crack feels good, they all feel good. Drugs are an escape from the world that some people can handle and some can not. Meatwad is the man by the way, and that Daughter of the Devil show is just creepy really. Maybe people are cynicism because if take it all to seriously you sort of want to cry and start praying for the second coming. When has a generation every not felt lost in the shuffle though? Is that not part of acutally growing up and finding out your not a sum or your peers but a sum of own parts.

It ain't religion you need, gwarfan, but spirituality. You didn't go about finding Jesus for the right reason or the right way. It's inside yourself, you just gotta know how to reach it.
You hit the nail on the head about drugs feeling good and thats why people do 'em. But some ain't got the sense God gave a stump to know what kind is safe and what kind ain't. All that crack and meth stuff ain't nothin but poison, more than cigarettes or liquor or those plants they smoke.
ibdaisy's right too. The good kids don't get the attention they deserve and there's some good ones out there.

I am not promoteing illegal or criminal acts, but mushrooms are pure poison and they are fun like a waterslide. Kids of the 60s and 70s did drugs like they were running out. They got stoned and talked and sang about freedom and peace. They did not change a thing though. Every group wants to feel they are the ones to make it all turn around but they got older and bitter and give up because you can not drum circle your way to peace and you can not pray your way to a better world. You can only make yourself better. Spirituality today is watered down to this Buddy Jesus figure its hard to believe in it. That combined with better education of the world and information hurts gods case. I do not like the hard right religious guy but the hard left spirtuality guy with his Jesus excepts everyone and nothing you do it really wrong jibberish is just as bad. God should be a bitter more of a hard a-- on his rules and so should the clergy. This whole wussification of kids is sad.

I think it really is all about spirituality. Too many times you see people hiding behind religion...some of the same people that sit in the pews Sunday morning would just as soon step on your face as to look at you Sunday afternoon.
And what's wrong with the Buddy Christ? Kevin Smith is genius...

You did'nt get my point. I believe in GOD, but I did not mention religion...I was talking about level headed kids with a sense of what is right and what is wrong. What they want out of life and being intelligent enough to steer away from poison. Everyone faces difficulties at some point in their lives. However, that does not mean that they say "screw this...I'll just get on drugs" You make it look as though that is the only answer. If you did all of these drugs and think you are home safe...don't hold your breath. You may have problems on the way that could shorten your life span.I really hope not, but please be careful how you use your experience. I would not want young impressionable kids to get the wrong idea.Don't take this as an argument..I care!

gwarfan commented on Saturday, Jul 26, 2008 at 13:07 PM

I'll just get on drugs???? I want to be a crackhead. Who says that even if their life is fine. Drugs are not going to be just for losers and if you eat one crack rock your life is over. Sure they can ruin your life in a moment if your not careful. You do drugs to be cool, your weak, or you just want to try something new and not allowed. Again drugs feel good. If you were huffing weed or snorting butter and it did not feel good you would never do it again. You get addicted to drugs because they feed a need inside you. People self medicate to escape. Just because you go to church doesnt stop you from being a junkie though. Breaking addictions calls for a higher power though normally. Some people might put on the garb of religion and never even really get what it means and are still empty inside. MOST and dominately kids do not feel hopeless and strung out of drugs. But views on recreational drugs are not what they might have been because our parents did drugs at least as experimenting in the 60's and 70's. The youth of america are not lost they are just like kids are suppose to be confused and looking for answers. They make mistakes and try ideas out to see if they can do it better some how.
