One of the many perks of living in the south is it’s propensity for festivals and community events. Throughout the year, we look forward to events like the Kiwanis-Ogeechee Fair in the fall, the Rattlesnake Roundup in Claxton, the Turpentine Festival in Portal, Another Blooming Festival in Metter, and many more. Every year for the past 14 years, the City of Statesboro Public Works department shows their appreciation for the community by holding the Annual Watermelon and Peanut Boiling Festival. Hundreds of people from Statesboro show up for the event, which offers up free drinks, watermelon and boiled peanuts to anyone who attends. The festival, which starts today (Friday) at 10 a.m. and wraps up around 12 p.m., will be held at the City of Statesboro Public Works building, located at 5 Braswell Street. This is a perfect way to get out and meet your neighbors, chat with friends, and enjoy your community! Additionally, we would love to know about your favorite community festivals and events. Log on to community.statesboroherald.com and share your thoughts! See you at the festival!

Thanks.

I'm just surprised that our local Robbins and Braswells don't have some kind of competition.

Watching the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest on Coney Island NY (home of Nathan's Hot Dogs) July 4th...made me wonder why Robbins doesn't have something.

Why not a Claxton Fruit Cake have a eating contest?

It would be a little more difficult for Braswells, but maybe they could have a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich eating contest.

It all boils down to some local foods and a great time (and possibly a soar stomach or two.)
