Hi everybody! Socialworkguy here. Happy 4th to all. I am having an arguement with my friends, so I decided to turn to the internet for an answer to a GSU sports question: Is there anybody out here besides me who is not in favor of GSU making a jump to I-A sports? I am not in favor of this because I like GSU sports, especially football, the way it is: comptetive, with a realistic chance to go deep into the playoffs--and maybe win it all-- almost every year. (Yes I called it I-A, because its fun to remember...hey, its my blog)

I remember when GSU played at Womack Field years ago. I remember as a kid leaving Marvin Pittman on the school bus in the fall, hoping for a red light at the corner of 301 and Tillman so I could watch the Eagles practice for a few minutes.

I remember where I was when they beat Furman 44-42. It was one of my most fondest memories-with dad- with the radio on and the tv volume off, so we could hear the local coverage.

Heck, I even remember working at a local gas station, and Erk Russell came in to pay for a tank of gas. I was so impressed with that man, I could have strapped on a helmet and run through the wall of the Time Saver.

These may be little things to you, dear reader, but to me, these memories are my treasures. I dont want to trade those in for anything. I dont want to be one of those who say: "I remember when things were better. They were almost always in the hunt for a national title, but since we're I-A have to endure the following:"

1. Woo hoo! We Made it to the Mineke Car Care Bowl!
2. 2-4-6-8 we got beat by 58!
3. Wow! we are conference champs! Since we are in the Pearly White Teeth Conference, we get an automatic bid to the Milkshake Bowl! WOW!!!!!

To close, here's my point: There is no guarntee that GSU sports, especially football, will be as comptetive on I-A as it is now in I-AA. Are you, oh loyal 'we need to move to I-A' supporter, ready to guarntee that GSU will compete at the highest levels of I-A within the next 5 years of being accepted? By the way, highest levels = NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, not a trip to the Spare Change Bowl. Can you say, with a straight face, that within 5 years of making the jump to I-A GSU will compete for 4 quarters--and win--against the likes of UGA, LSU, Oklahoma, USC, and Texas?

To all the people that like the cute little countdown clock (57 days to the game)on the sports page, what- are you into S&M? Countdown to a spanking or other bizarre thrashing for enjoyment? Did you not see the Sugar Bowl? They put it to Hawaii so bad the QB was shell shocked and the head coach quit. Did you forget that GSU is playing a team that expects to be in the National Championship Game in 2009? Or do you hope like me we'll be the Appalachan State to their Michigan? Conversely, are you praing like me that Georgia forgets that game?

I read the paper everyday, and I note the cute little "countdown to the big showdown" clock for GSU vs. Georgia. Let's use that as our litmus test- we'll see if GSU football is anywhere near ready to make the big jump. All in all, I'm borrowing a recent quote: "I hope we dont get our feelings hurt".

Many people who are not "true football fans" do not understand the complexity of NCAA football. They want to see us in DivI-A( istill call it that too), but they do not understand that we won'tt be beating UGA, FL. State, Bama, LSU, and the like.

Will they be happy with winning the Conferance USA Championship every year and getting a non-bowl? I doubt it. The ones that want us in A will probrably be the ones complaining about it if we get there.

If we can't move and compete, and I mean at the top, I think were better off being a big fish in a small pond. We would be lost in the ocean of A football. No longer a perinial threat for the Championship.

JUST SAY NO!!!

No, you are not the only one who feels the way you do. I don't think a jump up would be good either. Troy and Marshal did it, and look what happened to them - they have struggled ever since. If you are gonna play with the "Big Boys," you better have some horses. GSU is doing just fine where they are. They are winning National Championships on a fairly regular basis, in a playoff system that is really fair and really works. To go up to a national arena will be costly. In fact, they may never be able to win a National Championship again. I just don't see them beating Texas, or Bama, or Florida, or UCLA in the Orange Bowl or wherever. If the university gets bigger, perhaps, but not right now. All of you who want to move up to the next level need to cool it, and chill.

A couple of notes on this:
First, the "countdown" in the Herald is a countdown to the start of football season, not the countdown to a "spanking" (unless, of course, you think we're going to get beaten all season...?)
Also, if there was a move to I-A, obviously we would have to build up to it — of course, I am sure you are not thinking that there will be a magical overnight transformation where we will beat all the more seasoned teams.
