Well, just like that, the 2007-2008 Statesboro athletic season is over.
With Griffin's sweep of the Diamond Devils on Wednesday up in Paulding County, we all have to start looking towards 08-09 probably a little sooner than we would have wished.
Statesboro exit in the second round of the GHSA Class AA state playoffs wasn't all that unexpected. Griffin certainly looked to be a state title contender and had the best hacks at Tony Hill and Crawford Simmons I'd seen all year. Some days you're the bug and some days you're the windshield.
As for SHS athletics as a whole, I've learned a lot about the everyone involved with the Devils in my first full year on the beat.
I think the overriding theme this season was the ability for SHS to rise up and surprise some people. From football to track, from boys' hoops to baseball, Statesboro relished in situations this year in which their collective backs were against the wall. I'm sure it pushed plenty of gray hairs up through the scalps of the coaches - but it sure made for some good newspaper.
Football will be here before you know it, and the start of another sports cycle will be upon us. One thing's for sure, we can only hope for as much excitement next year as we lived through in this one.
I'll leave you with three pics from Wednesday game - in hopes that all three young of these young men may see each other in the big's one day.
The first is Tony Hill brushing back top prospect Tim Beckham, followed by Hill delivering to the senior shortstop. Finally, Crawford Simmons takes a shot at Jeremy's little brother in Game No. 2.
