Everything Old is New Again

A couple of weeks ago my husband and I decided to have a garage sale. While rummaging around in our attic for items to sell, I came across a box of my old clothes dating back to when I was in high school. Several of the pieces of clothing were heavily embellished with sequins, rhinestones, and the like. Gosh, did I actually used to wear that stuff?

Anyway, I decided to charge a dollar a piece for the clothes at our garage sale. Even at that low price I was not sure how many people would be interested in such dated pieces. As it turned out, though, there was one person who was VERY interested.

I was in the process of sorting the clothes into piles when my four-year old daughter, Rebecca, walked into the room. She ran right over and started sifting through the clothing. "This is beautiful!" she exclaimed, holding up the rhinestone-studded shirt that I wore for my senior year "glamour shot." Next she grabbed a black sequined skirt with the tags still attached and slid it over her head like a dress. "I could wear this to a ball," she told me in all seriousness.

Rebecca examined every piece of old clothing carefully. Of course her favorites were the very ones I would not be caught dead in today. When I told her that I planned to sell the clothes at our garage sale, she became quite distressed. "But I want to keep them all for me!" she wailed.

I was not about to let my entire high school wardrobe find a permanent home in Rebecca’s costume bin. However, my husband and I did allow Rebecca to pick three pieces of clothing to hold out from the sale and keep as her own. It was hard for her to narrow down her choices, but finally she settled on the aforementioned sequined skirt and rhinestone-studded shirt, along with a black beaded blouse

Ever since the garage sale Rebecca has been busy altering my old clothes in various ways. She has cut the sleeves off of the rhinestone shirt and decorated them with stickers. She has pinned the sequined skirt in several places to make it fit her more like a dress, and she has harvested most of the beads from the blouse to use in a variety of art projects. She has taken my old possessions and made them her own.

I guess what they say is true; everything old is new again…but when it involves kids, there is almost always an unexpected twist!
