Can anybody tell me why a 78 year old woman would be summoned to jury duty here?Reading the summons you may buy out by making a trip to the offices of and blah, blah blah and explaining . The inconvenience when aged and disabled along with the gas etc.
Why on earth would Sherri Akins do this? Is she instructed to call all living creatures?

Aren’t jury members chosen by random? Although I have never been chosen (even though I would gladly do my civic duty) and do not work in the field, I believe it is a very random process. Should the clerk of court review the age and medical status of everyone chosen?

Random yes but the process kicks out the aged. In florida no person over 70 was called . That did not leave many as most are retirees.
Medical status no.
I believe computer is used and set to omit some ,also including felons ,etc.

Well maybe our local system isn't setup in the same manner. Have you called the clerks office or contacted one of the commisioners? They may like to know about this and that other places have setups to avoid such things.

Well, in the first place, jurors are selected randomly, once via a drawing, and now by computer. It is possible to "get out" of serving IF you are over 65, at least in my county (not Bulloch), or if you have a good reason. I have always considered jury duty as one of the obligations of being an American, so even though I am now 77 years old, I still show up for the pool if called. If they don't want to use me, that's fine, but that's up to the lawyers who hold the strikes. I can't imagine an American not wishing to serve on a jury without good cause.

OK --that is what it is here--so be it and I am glad for those physically able to serve. What gets to me is the big typing of what will happen if you do not return the form in person and we cannmot do that . I am having neurosurgery on the 21st and might net be here at all.My wife is not capable of walking around offices.I AM AMERICAN !!Old Blush yu seem to be chastizing me!

Oh well, my son is deputy chief of the Federal Prison Bureau.Perhaps they can find room for us rather than go to the county jail.

Not trying to be rude, but in order to be called for jury duty one has to be a registered voter. How is it that your wife can make it to the voting booth, stand in line to vote, and cast her ballot if she is physically unable to serve jury duty?

Age Exemption: Exemptions are granted for citizens who are 70 years of age or older upon completion of a notarized age affidavit. A blank affidavit is available at the superior court clerk's office.

waranne commented on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 20:46 PM

Truth,
The last time my wife voted was in the last presidential election at the early voting for disabled in the courthouse. That was her only vote in GA. Mine also.
NOW--- did you assume this or were you meeting my wife on voting days without my knowledge?

waranne commented on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 20:50 PM

China, Thanks but isnt that an awful lot of red tape for two disabled people when their age is on their drivers license from which the juror list is taken. Why a notorized proof of age. If they do not believe it we should have been arrested for wrong age on drivers license.

Now I just called in and a most polite young lady told me she would take care of duty calls elimination for both of us without coming in as we were unable to.
That reminds me of when we were moving from the north to Summerville SC and letters went back and forth between me and the water dept.as follows:

Me: Please have our water turned on for july 4 as our moving in date.
Them: Sorry, but you must appear before us in person and make a $15 deposit.
Me: I am working and 900 miles away. Is there another solution?
Them: You may have your attorney appear before us and make the $15 deposit.
Me: I do not have an attorney there.Could I just mail you a check for $15 ?
Them: That would be fine !

Truth commented on Monday, May 12, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Waranne, I didn't assume anything. The only way you will be called for jury duty is if you are a registered voter. Unless you are a registered voter, your name will not come up in the pool for them to randomly select from. It seems to me that you could have just called to see if someone could help you before posting a blog blaming someone else (Sherri Akins) for your troubles, but that is just my opinion.

Agreed!Hasty action brought on from anger , in a moment of pain.Thank you for pointing me correctly.I only hope my operation will fix it.It entails 4-5 hours of reaming out deposits inside the spine with laser and fusion in two areas. It is so bad now that I could scream but no one would hear me.
