Before you know it, the athletic season for Statesboro could over very quickly here over the next few days. The Statesboro baseball team travels to Wayne County this weekend for a doubleheader against the 1-seeded Yellow Jackets. The winner earns a berth in the state tournament. I can imagine WCHS isn't looking forward to facing the Devils. Despite Statesboro's ups and downs, going against pitchers Crawford Simmons and Tony Hill back-to-back is no cakewalk for any team. Can SHS pull off the upset this weekend? They can do more than that. If this team clicks, both on offense and defense, they could be a huge threat not only this weekend but for weeks to come. They, however, could also be beaten this weekend, and we'll have to wait until next year for SHS baseball. On the track, the Statesboro girls finished up last weekend and will send five to the state meet. The boys' team goes this Saturday and Monday and are certainly considered a favorite to win the 3-AAAA title. Saturday's field events begin at 10 a.m. at Georgia Southern. All schools will return Monday at 5 p.m. for the running.
