It was a tough week to be a Blue Devil.
Both the girls and boys basketball teams hosted games in the second round of the state tournament and both were expected to come away winners. Neither did.
It'd be hard to argue which loss was tougher - the girls being upset or the boys coming up one point short.
The Lady Devils looked to be a serious title contender, what with All-American Monnette Bennett leading the charge and six other seniors on the roster. But Statesboro's deja-vu this postseason has been to start slow, pull ahead in the third and then hang on in the fourth.
The only problem was, this time when SHS pulled ahead in the third, the visiting Bravettes from Baldwin answered right back.
That's basketball for you: some nights the other team is just better.
The boys team wasn't expected to even have a winning season, much less pull off the monumental feats it did.
Eric Ferguson placed the Devils on his back and led SHS to a Region 3-AAAA championship and two state tournament home games.
Jonesboro didn't care.
The Cardinals gave everything Statesboro could handle, and in the end, the composure SHS had relied so much on wilted at just the wrong time. Two missed shots, four missed free throws and a turnover later - the Devils were done.
I urge all Statesboro basketball fans to hold their heads high, however. It's not often you'll find two region champions on the same campus. You will at SHS - and that's something to be awfully proud of.
Finally, baseball season is underway for the Diamond Devils.
This team has all the tools to be something special. The one question mark - and it's a big one - can the Devils put some runs on the board?
Statesboro won the season opener against 2007 Region 3-AAA champion South Effingham, 3-0. That score should look familiar for Devil fans - great pitching, great defense and a little bit of offense.
If Statesboro can get the bats going and sustain some offense with a talented and experienced bunch - this could be the year for SHS.
