True meaning of the 4th of July

The 4th of July 1776 was our Independence Day, and still is. Sadly, if a news reporter were to go to Mill Creek Park for the Fireworks display and day long activities, and asked people why they were there, I doubt anyone would say “To celebrate our Independence, Our Freedom from government tyranny. Better yet, ask the members of Congress or any other elected official in government. Today people think of the 4th of July as a day of cookouts, sales, and Fireworks, with no understanding of the historical events that lead to the establishment of the greatest nation in human history.

When our country won it’s Freedom from King George III of England, what followed for over one hundred and fifty years was a celebration of our winning Freedom to charter our own destiny. We celebrated it on the 4th of July with parades, cookouts, and speeches, to remind us of what we had created. The most important event on the 4th of July, in those days, was the public reading of the “Declaration of Independence” at every town celebration throughout the nation.

I am sixty nine years old and have never attended a 4th of July celebration where the “Declaration of Independence” has been read, the very purpose for celebrating this day! It is why those who will gather at Mill Creek Park will have no idea of the importance of the 4th of July, to our American History.

The Greatest Document written by man, is being forgotten by the American People, and so too is the Freedom from government tyranny that it talks about. We are but one generation away from loosing our Freedom from government tyranny, due to our own ignorance.

Our schools no longer “teach” The Declaration of Independence and the government tyranny, over the people, that it talks about. I invite you to google President Calvin Coolidge's speech on July 4th 1926, at Independence Hall, Philadelphia, on the 150th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is a brilliant speech. It, like the Declaration of Independence should be taught to our children, for they tell us who we are as Americans, unique in this world of government tyranny.

Ironside, you harp about "government tyranny". I believe the issue leading to the Declaration of Independence was taxation without representation, not tyranny per se. Do you resent the government tyranny which provides safer food through the FDA and USDA? Do you abhor the tyranny which provides safe air travel through the FAA and NTSB? DO you wish to abandon the advances accomplished through the NIH, NIMH, CDC, and federal grants to research institutions and universities? How about cleaner air and water brought about only by the EPA after state and local governments failed to protect the general population for the sake of the almighty dollar?
Tyranny by the government has been visited upon only those least able to defend themselves - and it hasn't been white people. And, yes, I am a white male only three years younger than yourself. It's been Native Americans uprooted from their lands and confined to reservations; Mexicans, their lands stolen by greedy settlers proceeding under the mantle of "manifest destiny"; German-Americans persecuted in WWI; Japanese-American citizens - not illegal immigrants, but "CITIZENS" - imprisoned in internment camps; and the list goes on.
You live under government by representation. If you lament tyranny, the people voted for it. Or ,rather, the people cared so little they neglected to vote and thus deserve their fates.

Bryant: The subject was the meaning of the 4th of July, not the Liberal Left's talking points of how bad the USA is. The FDA doesn't make food safe, those that grow ,process, and package our food keep our food safe. When a product has a problem, the manufacture pulls it off the shelf, and recalls it, because The manufacture wants to mitigate law suites that can result from their error, and cause the consumer to lose confidence and no longer buy the product, causing the company to go bankrupt. The FDA has no constitutional authority to exist. The FDA is not listed in Article I section 8 of the Constitution, The same is true for the USDA. The companies that manufacture planes, to the companies that fly the planes create safe air travel, not the FAA, or the NTSB. The companies can do what NTSB does, and do. If planes start falling out of the sky, people would stop flying, and the airlines go bankrupt. It is the airline companies that have a vested interest in air safety, not the government. The government can't go out of business if it gets it wrong. The NIH,NIMH,CDC functions used to be done by the military medical corps where it rightly belongs. The EPA functions are to be done by the States under the 10th Amendment. As to the government tyranny you talk about with Native Americans, is Left Wing Propaganda. Native Americans have the same rights as any other citizen. In time of war the President has the Constitutional right to protect the American people from foreign and domestic threats, ie.. German-Americans WWI and Japanese -Americans WWII. The government was also protecting them from those Americans who lost love ones at the hands of Germans or Japanese during the war, from taking revenge on a German-American or Japanese-American living in their town. Those of you on the Left fall to tell the full story of American history.

Ironside, I will only comment upon the second sentence in your post, which should suffice for the rest as well.

No, but those that grow, process, etc. do their best to ensure our food is safe through compliance with FDA/USDA regulations - which were instituted because of the abject failure of manufacturers to do so in the absence of outside regulation. You want to sue a major manufacturer, try Monsanto and good luck. Government regulation protects individuals who lack the wherewithal to challenge conglomerates and their retinue of attorneys.

'Nuff said.

And, yes, the American people for the most part do not associate the Fourth of July with anything other than fireworks and cookouts.

Bryant: How did we survive before the FDA? We have progressed a long way from the days of Upton Sinclair. Again, the FDA does not make food safe, there are still recalls of food by the manufacture. The FDA gets involved after the fact investigating what the manufacturer already knows and is correcting. The FDA does not keep our food safe. As to Monsanto, when companies get in bed with our politicians nothing good comes from it. Monsanto contributes to the politicians who in return write laws to protect Monsanto. Solution: Only allow a politician to receive contributions from a person who can legally vote for that politician and nobody else, no union money, company money, no political action groups. Now the politician is representing the voters instead of all the other groups wanting favors from the government.

I agree with your proposal on contributions as a partial solution to resolve politicians being in bed with corporations, etc. Abolish PACs - make politicians responsible for every ad run during an election. Legislatively overturn Citizens United - corporations and PACs are artificial constructs for legal purposes but not for the purposes of free speech or freedom of religion.
But the true issue today is uninformed people who believe FOX News only, or Daily KOS only - pick your leaning, left or right. Confirmation bias is a fact and we're being "led" by a fool who believes only what strokes his ego.

I'm glad that we agree on something. Our campaigns cost too much, which allows all the shady people on the Left and Right to buy influence in Washington. Get all of that money out of politics. Stop allowing these groups to buy favors receiving hundreds of billions of dollars from the Federal Treasury. Doing this would pay for a very nice tax cut for all tax payers, and improve our economy and jobs.

Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration "Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,- That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

The Founding Fathers made provisions in the Constitution to change the Government, thru Constitutional Amendments or calling for a Constitutional Convention of States. The problem is the Left wants to change the Government, but not thru the Constitutional Amendment process, rather through Presidential Executive Orders and Executive Branch employees, (not Congress) writing new laws and Liberal Left Wing judges writing new laws instead of following the laws passed by Congress, all of which is unconstitutional, creating the great political divide in our country. If the Left would follow the provisions in the Constitution to change the Government, we would not be a divided nation.

You need to quit seeing "the problem" as "the Left" because that's a lot of cow patties! Research executive orders by President and see who signed the most and then look up the executive orders themselves and see how many actually implemented a change in a law. But take your blinders off and quit channeling Hannity and O'Reilly. You carp on "Liberal left" talking points while typing Breitbart drivel. The problem is not the liberal Left. The problem is not the Tea Party right. The problem is the slavish devotion of elected officials to corporate and individual high dollar donors and lobbyists with no consideration for the American voter.

Presidents have issued Executive Orders sense Washington. They are instructions to the departments in the Executive Branch on what the Presidents expects the Department to do in carrying out/enforcing the laws passed by Congress. That is what was done until Obama. Some of Obama's Executive Orders were new laws like his DACA order. Trump has maintained the proper use of Executive Orders.

I fully agree with you on the problem is the slavish devotion of elected officials to corporate and individual high dollar donors and lobbyists with no consideration for the American voter.
