Mayor's race: ERK wouldn't be proud

This is an official email from the Jan Moore campaign sent yesterday. Notice the subtle but obvious racism in the starred paragraph -most African American live in the William James district and they're voting! Help!

There's not a single African american on the email list. Coach Russell would definitely not approve and would not so eloquently call this Moore person to the carpet. Statesboro, it's the 21st century and anyone associated with this campaign should be embarrassed.

"Dear Friends,

As Erk so eloquently put it, I need you "One More Time!" The Run-Off Election is tomorrow, Tuesday, December 3 and it is imperative that we get everyone we know who is registered and lives in the city to go to the polls and vote Jan Moore for Mayor.

****The Sunday Statesboro Herald reported that 621 early votes have been cast with 428 votes coming from the William James voting precinct and 198 coming from the Pittman Park precinct. ****

If you can vote in this election - please do so. If you cannot, please strongly encourage anyone you know that can to get to the polls. Give them a call and ask if they have voted, remind them to go vote, or offer them a ride to the polls. If there is any problem with transportation, please let us know and we will provide or arrange transportation to the polls for anyone who would like to vote. I need YOU to win this election. Thanks for all your help and support! Together we can make Statesboro the best that it can be!"

Amazing that race has, at least publicly, stayed out of the picture for so long, but since this blog breaks the dam, here goes.......

The blogger obviously assumes that all blacks will vote for the black candidate, a racist statement of itself but if true, and from experience there is no reason to believe that it is not, it shows that this mayoral election is mostly about racial preference.

So as a purely personal and possibly politically incorrect opinion, I think that the last few years have taught many painful lessons that beg the question “do we really want to vote yet another African American community organizer into a position of authority?”

Are you kidding? McCollar's a great guy but his victim mentality has hurt him. Jan doesn't need to pull the race card - besides, she has too much class for that. McCollar has great ideas but seems to have a glitch in his getting into action. Moore will be a fantastic, active mayor and pulling the race card like you have disgraces both candidates.

ohbrother commented on Tuesday, Dec 03, 2013 at 13:05 PM

Great comments both. Youre right on the spot about Jonathan, monkey. This idea was pointed out to me by a number of people who saw the email and I posted it to get feedback from the blog community. Lets hear from others.

Sorry but this is a stupid blog! I see nothing racist in the email neither do I see the reference to Erk Russell being something that Erk would object to. Give me a break.

wildturkey commented on Tuesday, Dec 03, 2013 at 17:23 PM

it is a racist comment because you want it to be a racist statement. I see nothing racist about it, all I see is a statement based on facts.
now if you want to see something racist run on out for supper at the CRACKER BARREL. they named a eating establishment after a slang name that the oppressed brotha calls us white folks. just imagine if they named it spook barrel?? don't you know every one in the William james voting district would be lined up screaming racism! racism! naacp would be all over the news crying and demanding they shut the barrel down....but do us white folks cry RACISM? nope. we just keep our mouths shut and enjoy the fried chicken!!! they know how to cook up some good fried chicken. I love fried chicken. don't go to screaming im a racist either. you brought it up. I really gotta agree with golfguy. this is a stupid blog..

ohbrother commented on Tuesday, Dec 03, 2013 at 18:24 PM

Actually, it was named after an unleavened baked good but thanks for upping the stupidity bar.

I must be the stupid one I don't see African American any where in the email. Did I miss it?

Or was it you ohbrother to first pull this into the equation?

Turkey, it often seems to be a barrel full crackers.

Also cracker berral was not named after unleaven bread. Hence the word barrel.

Oh brother rabbit.

wildturkey commented on Tuesday, Dec 03, 2013 at 19:58 PM

no one can UP the stupidity bar that ohbrutha has started for ohbrutha tops all.............

I am so glad I live in the county-but if I did live in town I admit I would vote for Ms. Moore just because she is a woman-

golfman commented on Tuesday, Dec 03, 2013 at 20:54 PM

Now that is not a reason to vote for someone. We have Obama now because he is black. We should vote based on ability and vision. She will make a good Mayor and was the best choice but not because she is a woman but because she was best for the job.

wildturkey commented on Tuesday, Dec 03, 2013 at 21:59 PM

Actually, it was named after an unleavened baked good .....

your source??????

Bryant commented on Wednesday, Dec 04, 2013 at 13:30 PM

Turkey, too bad you took what seemed to be a reasoned discussion about perceptions and dragged it down to the lowest common denominator.

And, ohbrother, a cracker may be leavened : a dry thin crispy baked bread product that may be leavened or unleavened (Merriam-Webster)

I am so pleased that Ms. Moore is the new Mayor of Statesboro. Having the misfortune of owning business' in cities that had dumbed down the Mayor's office in Atlanta, Savannah, and the most recently in Hinesville, I applaud the voters in Statesboro for having more insight of their elected leaders instead of dumbing down their Mayor's office. I have moved business and jobs out of the city of Hinesville because of the voters voting in their Mayor into office because of his race while his house was for sale on the court house steps for unpaid tax lien, and now since elected his house paid off, all taxes up to date, and he drives a new Porsche everyday on the tax payers dime. To the originator of this blog I say opinions are like something else we all know, everyone has one, and in my humble opinion yours, Sir stinks of ENTITLEMENT POLITICS.

Congratulations Ms. Jan.

it didnt seem to be a reasoned discussion to me. brutha pulled the race card. I called bull$h!t. plain and simple.

Bryant commented on Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 at 09:48 AM

Seemed more like a plea to support his candidate of choice. Guess I take too much at face value instead of searching for an ulterior motive.

datruth commented on Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 at 14:27 PM

I can tell by the way this blog is going that maybe one of you actually saw or attended any of the forums. I can't speak for any of those other cities and their mishaps with poor leadership but as for Jonathan McCollar this guy is far from dumb. He was without a doubt the best prepared candidate when it came to the issues and he had the track record to prove it. Hell, he took a campaign that was out spent 10-1 and damn near won. If that is not a testiment to his skill level I don't know what is. As for Ms. Moore I truly don't think she is racist, but I do think one or two of you are.

golfman commented on Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 at 15:33 PM

Now ain't dat datruth.

datruth commented on Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 at 15:57 PM

This city was fortunate to have two good candidates. There is no need to demonize one or the other.

Hutch commented on Sunday, Dec 08, 2013 at 15:51 PM

It only stated the fact that so many had voted at one polling place and so many had voted at another polling place. It was only racist if you perceived it was racist.

Lincoln - good guy?
February 12, 2010
Here is a portion of Lincoln's letter to Horace Greely that appeared in Harper's Weekly on September 6, 1862. "As to the policy I "seem to be pursuing," as you say, I have not meant to leave any one in doubt. I would save the Union. I would save it ...
