Hospital Bill Sticker Shock

About a month ago I had to have a CT Scan done at our local hospital. I was there for almost 3 hours, 2 hour wait and a little under an hour for the procedure. A few weeks later, I found out that my insurance initially denied the test. I got a bill from the hospital for almost $7000. After the initial shock, I thought surely that this was an error, so I called them up. They told me it was not an error. There charge for this abdominal CT to find out about my kidney stone was actually almost $7000. I was in total disbelief. I asked them to re-file it with my insurance as I was was instructed to do by my insurance company. My 10% part is still going to be $700. The hospital told me that if the insurance denied it again, they could give me a substantial discount if I paid cash. The discount is something like 64%, but my part would still be over $2300.

Still in total shock, I called around to compare prices on CT scans. The imaging center in Savannah's full charge for the exact same CT scan is around $900. The hospital in Metter only charges $1200 for the same scan. These prices are before the insurance claim. What is wrong with this picture?

I was whining to a friend of mine about this and she told me that this hospital was a for profit corporation and it has been called the most expensive hospital in Georgia and one of the most expensive in the Southeast. Is this true?? How is that our nice little town gets this distinction? Certainly some of our great investigative reporters would jump on a story like this considering all of the changes that the Obama administration is proposing to lower healthcare costs in America. We are being absolutely fleeced and robbed right here in our own little community. If the quality of this hospital was 5 star, I might could understand the extra expense, but the quality and service here stinks.

While I have had good experiences with my care at the hospital, it is very expensive. So far, my insurance has covered my medical bills there, but my out-of-pocket was still pretty high.
After my first experience, I requested and received estimates of costs for procedures before they were performed.
Our hospital is owned by a private, for-profit corporation and that is probably why their charges are higher than other hospitals.
I have had good experiences at our hospital with both treatment and service, but I do wish the costs were more in line with other area hospitals.

I seem to recall an article in the paper a couple of years back reporting that EGRMC was the most expensive hospitals in Georgia. But hey if it's life or death I guess I would have no choice. Still with some of the experiences I have had out there I would almost rather die on the way to Savannah!

Unless a life or death situation, I would not use EGRMC. Costs are too high (and I have very good insurance) and my family has experienced unacceptable levels of nursing and attending physician indifference during hospitalization. However, ER services (although expensive) have been excellent.

Local Hospital

Looks like our corporate hospital has become part of a larger corporation. More shareholders to make happy. Believe me folks, this hospital's administration puts profits and its shareholders before its patients and staff consistently. If you don't believe it, call and ask for a price list of common procedures and ...

What is it with Doctors?
August 14, 2007
I admire Doctors for the dedication and hard work it takes to get through school. I work in healthcare, so I choose to remain anonymous while I vent. Doctors do work hard for their degree, no doubt, but why would a person go to school for all of those years ...
