What to do about Syria

This is more of the Arab Spring. These countries are made up and lead by thugs, murderers, and the most veil of human debris, no different than our inner city drug gangs, and other organized crime elements. They are lead by terrorists. Nothing will change in Syria other than which gang of thugs and murderers will control power over the good people. Nothing will change in that part of the world until the tenants of their religion are changed. Islam burst on to the world stage around 700 AD to stop the spread of Christianity. It was anti- Christ. Mohammad used the sword to compel people to follow his teachings or die. Our Nations’ first wars were with Islam during Washington’s and Thomas Jefferson’s presidencies. We went to war with the Barbary Pirates who had been attacking our merchant ships on and off sense the 16th century, when we were colonies. They operated out of Tripoli, Tunis, and Algiers. These two wars 1801 and 1815 are part of the Marine Corps hymn “From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, we will fight our nation’s battles on the land and on the seas…..”. In 1785 then Ambassadors Thomas Jefferson and John Adams met with the Ambassador of Tripoli to reach a solution to the attacks on American shipping. This is from the written account of that meeting.

“ When they inquired by what right the Barbary States preyed upon American shipping, enslaving both crews and passengers, America’s two foremost envoys were informed that “it was written in the Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon whoever they could find and to make Slaves of all they could take as prisoners, that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise,” (The spelling of Mussulman was how Muslim was spelled in 1785.)

To Muslims in the heyday of Barbary Piracy, there were, at least in principle, only two forces at play in the world.: the Dar al-Islam, or House of Islam, and the Dar al-Harb, or House of War. The House of Islam meant Muslim governance and the unrivaled authority of Sharia, Islam’s complex system of holy law. The House of War was simply everything that fell outside of the House of Islam. That area of the globe not under Muslim authority, was where the infidel ruled. For Muslims, these two Houses were perpetually at war, at least until mankind should finally embrace Allah and his teachings as revealed through his prophet, Mohammad.

Today’s jihadists are no different then the jihadists of 1785, 1801, or 1815 when we were at war with them. We are still at war with them because we belong to the Dar al Harb, House of War. The Bush Doctrine of the United States after the 911 attack, when he told the world “ You are either with us or against us” is the only way to fight and defeat this latest jihad against the West. This is the “Great Struggle of Our Times“.

Finally, we do not need to do anything in Syria other than humanitarian aid to those we can trust who are with us in this world struggle. Once the new gang of thugs take over, than we should remove them by force, for their only goal in life is to destroy the United States. We must be prepared to spend the rest of this century, to helping the good people in the Middle East win control of their countries. We should not leave Iraq or Afghanistan. We should stay and do what we did for Germany and Japan after WWII and Korea after the Korean War. We still have troops there to let them know we will support those who are with us. We will need to help the good people in the Middle East who want their Freedom; to help them re-educate generations of Muslims to reform their religious teachings and their institutions based on those religious teachings.

This is Our Generations’ Great Struggle of good vs. evil.

Footnote: The vast majority of Americans today have little knowledge of American History, even a very basic knowledge. Our Free Press can fill in the gaps so that Americans can form informed opinions on current events and major issues of our times. The problem is our Press is no better educated in American History than the general public. There needs to be a major change in how we educate our children in public schools, colleges and universities.

ironside,
I agree that we should avoid any more entanglements in Syria or the Mideast. I will have to disagree with your analysis of Islam. Islam is a complex religion composed of many sects some moderate and some extreme just as Christianity is a complex religion composed of many sects. I would like to believe that I am a follower of Christ ,but I would object if someone were to assume that I support the members of the Westside Baptist Church or polygamists in Utah, or allegedly Christian prophets such Jim Jones. And like it or not ,we have our own domestically produced Christian version of the Taliban.

As a student of history, you should know that the history of the Mideast is complex. Religion plays an important role, but so do poverty, corruption, illiteracy, political instability, tribalism,a legacy of colonialism, western interference and exploitation, revanchism, and the lack of national identity.Stir in cultural dissonance and mix well.

Our current preoccupation with the Mideast distracts us from the danger we face from the growing power of an increasingly aggressive and dangerous China. Recent moves to reconfigure the DOD into a global antiterrorist force have been foolish in the extreme. A case in point would be the littoral combat ship, a very expensive replacement for the Perry class frigate which has no discernable purpose other than to chase very lightly armed irregulars on calm seas. It would be outgunned by any modern corvette or patrol boat. A WW ll Higgins boat would blow it out of the water. For this reason, the LCS has been dubbed the little crappy ship. The Air Force fields aging fighters which are quickly losing the technological edge we have long enjoyed. Read about some of the latest Sukhoi fighters or the Chinese J10, J 11, or J20. You might also want to read about the Sunburn missiles on some of the new Chinese destroyers.

I am not suggesting that terrorism is not a threat. We need to be vigilant ,but we also need some sense of proportion. The greatest threat is the threat of national blackmail or intimidation or of nation destroying world war.

Ironside, one comment. Tripoli was a non-event.

I think Fly has some good points (2nd time in one year!!) I do not like the downsizing of our military's strategic and tactical capabilities, but the military is always subject to whims of fickle politician who feel the need to be re-elected.

It does NOT help when the winds of defense downsizing are fanned by a media that does not understand and definitely does not like this country's military. Bryant - I will grant you a pass on this one. You seem like a straight up guy.

Thanks, Charlie. I'm not up to debating a worthy opponent today.
